Halimeda sp.
Common Names
- Cactus Algae
- Moneywort
Scientific Classification
Chlorophyta, order Bryopsidales.
Coenocytes - no individual cells.
Appearance
Structure is a flexible sting of flattened leaf like segments, each segment is a deposit of calcium carbonate covered with algae protoplasm.
Reproduction
Stalks will turn pale white and display dark green to black spots on the edges of the thallis, leading to sporulation, a lack of pruning may be the main reason for this.
- A patch of 200 sq feet will produce more than 100 lbs of aragonit per year. Dead stalks can be left in the display or sump and will add to the substrate.
Considerations
Halimeda requires the same levels of alkalinity and calcium as many category:Stony Corals and can be used as a gauge to proper levels,ie, when its visibly growing levels are good.
Large growths of halimida will deplete levels quickly Resistance to grazing and the fact that it won't overrun the display makes it a good choice for an exporting algae Known to turn white in the absence of light is a protective device against sacoglossan slugs, the chloroplasts of green tissue migrate deep into the thallis leaving the calcium carbonate base exposed.
Aquarium Suitability
Excellent. Will not "go sexual" like Caulerpa.
