Tridacna maxima

Common Name Great, Maxima or Rugose Clam

Max. Size: 14 inches

Tank Size: Due to its requirements for calcium and alkalinity, minumum 30 gallons for a small one, to make monitoring it easy.

Aggression: None, but some fish have been known to be killed by the closing of its mantle.

Hardiness: Advanced aquarists only, not for a beginer.

Reef-Safe: yes

Available as captive-bred: yes

Hitchhiker? Possibly on some live rocks. Chances are slim.

Physical Description

A hard calcium carbonate shell surrounds its mantle.

Distribution

Additional Notes

Keep phosphate very low, less than .03ppm at all times. The low phosphate promotes calcification of the clams shell. High phospates will inhibit its growth. It is a known reducer of nitrate, but the effect is minimal. Perhaps 10 in 100 gallons would show measureable effects.
